Can enough money buy you eternal youth?

A bath in donkey’s milk, the blood of children, tortoise scrotum soup — the list of anti-aging treatments goes back centuries.

No need to go that far.

It turns out, the best kind of anti-aging treatment is inside one’s own body, and the rich are taking advantage of it, exploring the latest research in new technologies, genome mapping and stem cell treatments.

Among them is Oracle billionaire Larry Ellison, a large investor of the Ellison Medical Foundation, which supports research exploring the biology that underlies aging and age-related diseases. And there’s billionaire Peter Nygård, who says he wants to live forever (or die trying), and has suggested he’s found the keys to immortality in stem cell research.

Some doctors agree that stem cells are a key part of chasing youth.

“If you’re a wealthy guy and haven’t stored your stem cells, I think you’re a total idiot,” said Dr. Lionel Bissoon, a New York City physician who sees a number of stressed out, wealthy patients.

For the long term he recommends stem cell storage, which works as a sort of rainy day insurance. The cells are extracted, preferably when the patient is on the younger side — around 30 is said to be a good age — and can then be used to boost an immune system or help to rebuild damaged organs later.

People discovered the sweetly satisfying taste of sugarcane on an island in New Guinea nearly 10,000 years ago, and since then, it has ubiquitously sprinkled itself around the world in forms of candy bars and unexpected places like barbeque sauces. When people first picked the raw cane, they chewed on the hard stem until an explosion of sweetness saturated their taste buds and hooked their senses. It spread like wildfire from island to island until it reached the mainland and by 500 A.D., it was already being processed into powders and used as medicine to treat ailments that ranged from headaches to impotence.

Today, it infamously laces its way through our pastries and Piña Coladas, but what about the other less obvious sugar-laden foods? Nutritionists, dieticians, doctors, and dentists alike have warned of sugar’s power to raise energy levels only to plummet soon after and cause a spiral of bad eating habits.

Harvard Medical School has found that even if you aren’t overweight from a diet of sugar and high-calorie fats, it can still increase your risk of dying from heart disease. They reached that startling conclusion after a 15-year study revealed participants who ate 25 percent or more of their calories in sugar, more than doubled their risk of dying from heart disease than those whose diets included 10 percent of sugar. Where are they getting all of this sugar? Many are getting sugar from sodas, energy drinks, and sports drinks, which account for more than one-third of our national added sugar consumption. However, there are some who are unintentionally having sugar binges with foods that are saturated in sugar, such as sneaky snacks, sauces, and sandwich buns.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recommends the average person on a 2,000-calorie diet to consume no more than 10 teaspoons of sugar each day, or the equivalent to a 12-ounce soda. Sugar is the quiet chameleon of our food system. It changes forms from sucrose, corn sweeteners, glucose, dextrose, honey, maple sugar, and molasses. It’s guilefully hidden in pizza bread, hot dogs, soups, crackers, canned vegetables, mayonnaise, and peanut butter. (Learn more foods with hidden sugar)

Health advocates turn their backs on added sugars, which are sugars that are literally added to foods or beverages when they’re processed or prepared, because of their emptiness. Added sugars contribute no nutritional value to our diets and are thus essentially useless. But yet we’re consuming almost 152 lbs. of sugar each year, which is equal to 6 cups or 3 lbs. a week. Two hundred years ago, the average American only ate 2 lbs. of sugar each year, according to the USDA. Thanks to our demand, the supply brings us sugar shockers that are ready to ruin our diets everywhere.

Our bodies can only handle 20 grams of sugar a day for adult women and 36 grams of sugar a day for adult men, according to the American Health Association. Anything extra is turned into fat in our bodies unless it’s used as energy in an intense workout or other physical activity, Miller says.

Regenerative Medicine

Stem cell-based therapies, known collectively as “regenerative medicine,” have the potential to provide beneficial treatment for a number of diseases, in addition to overall improvement of health. Regenerative medicine is a new and developing field that aims to restore function in diseased or aged tissues through either revitalizing existing cells, or transplanting new ones. Specifically, Dr. Maharaj incorporates adult stem cells in his treatments.

Adult stem cells, also known as “hematopoietic or progenitor cells,” are cells produced in the bone marrow that can create all blood cell types. These cells are pluripotent, meaning that they have the remarkable potential to develop and grow into many different, specialized cells.

This growth process results in mature cells that are released into the peripheral blood stream. Those mature cells then circulate through our blood to naturally repair tissue and organ damage.

WITH TODAY’S KNOWLEDGE OF STEM CELLS, AGING DOESN’T HAVE TO BE WHAT IT USED TO BE

healthy_pain_free_coupleWhat is aging? Aging is defined by tissue and organ function decline. This decline in function is associated with increased oxidative damage, mitochondrial dysfunction, endocrine imbalance, and genomic instability.  Aging can also be defined as a decline in the responsiveness of the regenerative capacity of an organ. Every organ has stem cells; however some stem cells are more proliferative than others. For example, the stem cells of the bone marrow are highly proliferative, whereas the cells of the liver, heart and kidneys are not. So, is it possible to switch those less proliferative stem cells back on so we can get them to repair those tissues and therefore slow the process of aging? Can we rejuvenate stem cells by exposing them to a young systemic environment?

            Conboy et al established probiotic pairings (shared circulatory system) between young and old mice, thus exposing the old mice to factors present in young serum.2 Results showed that the stem cells from the young mice were able to migrate into the bone marrow of the old mice and aid regeneration of the bone marrow within the old mice. Further investigations revealed that the exposure of old mice to young serum restored the activation of Notch signaling, enhanced the expression of the Notch ligand (Delta), and enhanced proliferation. The findings of this study demonstrate a number of things:
1.     Systemic factors in the blood moderate molecular signaling pathways that are critical to the activation of tissue-specific progenitor cells.
2.     The systemic environment of a young animal promotes successful tissue regeneration.
3.     The systemic environment of older animals fails to promote, or actively inhibits, tissue regeneration.
4.     Aging can be reversed by the modulation of systemic factors.
